Agriculture is Florida's second most important industry -- after tourism. It is also one of the state's most important land uses. Florida's farms and commercial forests occupy slightly more than 50% of the state's land area and account for 66% of the state's privately owned land. Florida farms produce 253 agricultural commodities. Only five of these -- cotton, milk, peanuts, tobacco and sugar -- qualify for federal price supports. For the balance, the market sets their price, and that price is always changing ... one reason farming in Florida requires more than just skill and sophistication, but also an ability to withstand risk. |
