In regard to Kimberly
Strassel's Oct. 7 editorial-page piece "Klamath
Gothic": It's refreshing to us in the beleaguered West to know
there is a reporter in the East willing to write about the tactics and
goals of the extreme environmentalists. Ms. Strassel is absolutely
correct when she says, "What they are interested in is getting the
farmers off the land; they have admitted it." Here in far northern
California we have known that for some time, but because these people
are so well-funded it is difficult for us to get the media to print
the facts. There is a politically correct atmosphere that intimidates
anyone daring to question the motives of environmentalists.
The damage done to the
West by the extremists, particularly during the Clinton
administration, is incalculable: entire towns dead or dying, people's
lives radically altered, massive wildfires started in tinder-box fuel
accumulating due to the suspension of logging, lies told about the
ruination of the land because of cattle grazing despite scientific
evidence to the contrary, countless lawsuits filed to stop every kind
of activity using natural resources, and farmers thrown in jail for
daring to plow their own fields.
